Personal Success Skills - Certificate Program Requirements

The Personal Success Skills Certificate program teaches participants about personal leadership and evaluates how personal leadership differs from group/team leadership. The program sheds light on common myths about personal leadership styles and evaluates how one’s values impact the decision making. The Personal Success Skills program teaches participants effective communication skills and examines emotional intelligence and its effect on personal leadership. In each aspect participants are encouraged to examine his or her strengths and weaknesses and to explore ways to grow and improve.

Steps to earn a Leadership Certificate:

  1. Complete registration form.
  2. Attend the following four required programs
  3. Attendance of two pre-approved programs related to the four topics above.
    Examples include programs sponsored by: The Residence Halls, the academic colleges, Institute events such as Commission for Promoting Pluralism, the classes found on our web site, training for a job or leadership positions such as RA, SVP and OA training, or co-op training, other RLI programs such as, the Spring Conference, The overnights, The Transition to the Real World Series, Paychex Leadership Conference.
  4. Reflection Questions

    A set of reflection questions must be completed prior to the end of each of the six sessions attended. These questions must be answered in an essay format, addressing each of the Reflection Questions.

  5. RLI Review

    Lastly, the students must meet with one of the RLI team members and review his/her LEAD portfolio. The portfolio should include copies of the completed Competency Reflection Forms, a resume and any other work one desires.

  7. Celebrate! Closing Dinner and Certification

    Students that have completed all certificate requirements will be recognized at the LEAD Closing Dinner in May each year and will receive a certificate signed and stamped by the administrators from the RIT Leadership Institute.

Personal Success Skills - Learning Objectives

Emotional Intelligence
The student will be able:

  • To explain the definition of Emotional Intelligence.
  • To identify the five different components of Emotional Intelligence.
  • To understand what his/her strengths and weakness are in relation to the EI.
  • To identify at least two to three different strategies for improving his/her EI.

Interpersonal Communication
The student will be able:

  • To identify and to describe at least one model for effective interpersonal communication.
  • To define the term "reflective or active listening.
  • To list three to five skills of an effective communicator.
  • To explain the difference between defensive and non-defensive communication.
  • To describe the ways people can communicate non-verbally.
  • To list his/her strengths and weaknesses in regards to effective communication and identify strategies on how to improve his/her communication skills.

Leadership as a Lifestyle
The student will be able:

  • Describe myths about leadership
  • Define personal leadership vs. leading others
  • Describe what effective leadership is
  • Explain what success looks like to them
  • Identify areas of strength and area they would like to improve on in terms of personal leadership
  • Set goals for developing their skills and achieving success

Values & Decision Making
The student will be able:

  • Identify significant experiences and people in their lives that have helped to shape their values
  • Identify the values that guide their life and connect to their decision making
  • Understand how values impact decision making as a leader and how they can be a source of conflict
